VOLVO TRUCK AND BUS CENTRE
Laying a new foundation and other civil works
We were contracted by Teeside-based Volvo Truck & Bus Centre to carry out groundwork and civil engineering works on their site due to ground movement in the surrounding areas of the building’s footprint.
Ground movement can have a huge impact on a building’s foundations. This is because the movement causes the ground beneath the structure to sink, dragging the foundations down with it. The four main causes of ground movement are heave, landslip, settlement, and subsidence, and can all cause serious damage to a property if left untreated.
Volvo asked us to complete several works to repair and limit the impact of further ground movement on their site.
The first step was to remove the existing fire escape staircase on the site and provide a completely new foundation for the area to sit upon.
We completed a full ground investigation to determine the soil and rock composition and characteristics before gathering information on the ground conditions to create a design that would reduce the likelihood of damage.
We then designed and installed a new staircase and bespoke ramps for each exit of the building. They were designed to be adjusted should there be any additional movement to the existing ground.
Our team provided the client with a solid foundation and a number of steel structures that were all expertly designed, functional and built to the highest of industry standards.
