Hamilton Steel Buildings designs, supplies and installs steel buildings for businesses across Stockton-on-Tees, from the industrial estates in Thornaby and Billingham to the business parks out towards Yarm and Eaglescliffe.
We’re based at Rainton Bridge near Houghton le Spring, about half an hour up the A19, so Stockton is very much part of our patch. One of the projects we’re proudest of in the town is an extension for John Clark Valves, a valve company based right in the heart of Stockton that had outgrown its unit.
When we surveyed the JCV site, the ground wasn’t up to taking the usual column pads and 150mm slab. So instead we designed a ring beam and raft foundation that lets the new building and its base settle together as one. On top of that went a 36m x 9m x 4.5m cold rolled steel building with a large roller shutter in the front gable. It’s a good example of why we look at the ground before we price the steel, not after.
A lot of land around Stockton and the Tees has had an industrial past, and old fill, made ground and buried services are common. That’s why our own groundworks team designs the base around the actual frame and the actual ground on every job.
Steel Building Extensions in Stockton
Plenty of Stockton firms would rather grow on the site they’ve got than move. We design steel extensions that tie into your existing unit, deal with the foundations next to it and keep the weather out at the joint. See our guide to commercial building extensions.
Industrial Steel Buildings in Stockton
Workshops, production space, storage and trade units for the industrial estates around Thornaby, Portrack and Billingham, with roller shutters, personnel doors and insulated cladding specified to suit the job. More on our industrial steel buildings.
Commercial Steel Buildings in Stockton
Trade counters, showrooms and commercial units for business parks such as Preston Farm and Durham Lane. See our commercial steel buildings.
Secure Storage Buildings
Single skin or insulated storage buildings for plant, vehicles and stock, from a 6m x 6m garage-style unit up to large clear span stores. Our special offer buildings are a good place to start if a standard size fits.
Groundworks and Foundations
Pads, rafts, ring beams and reinforced slabs designed by our engineers from the frame loads. See construction groundwork.
We’re a family run firm, set up in 2017 by Managing Director Chris Hamilton, who has more than 20 years in construction. Chris is still involved in every job.

The GA drawings and structural calculations you need for Building Control are included free of charge, and we buy our cold rolled steel from trusted British suppliers. Planning in Stockton is handled by Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council, and we can manage the application for you. Our guide to planning permission for steel buildings explains when you’ll need it.
As well as Stockton town centre we cover Thornaby, Billingham, Norton, Ingleby Barwick, Yarm, Eaglescliffe and Wynyard. Just along the river we also have pages for Middlesbrough, Hartlepool and Darlington. See all the areas we serve.
Yes. One example is the 36m x 9m extension we designed and built for John Clark Valves in Stockton, on a ring beam and raft foundation because of the ground conditions. You can read the case study here.
It depends on the size, where it’s going and what the land is used for now. Some buildings come under permitted development and others need an application to Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council. We’ll tell you which applies before you spend anything on drawings, and we provide the structural calculations and GA drawings for Building Control free of charge.
Yes, a lot of our work is extensions. We survey the existing building, design the new frame to join it cleanly, and design the foundations to work around what’s already in the ground.
It mostly comes down to size, cladding, doors and the ground. Our guide to how much a steel building costs shows real prices, and we’ll give you an accurate quote once we’ve seen the site.
